- A substitute name used fairly frequently as a vocative in former times. Most people today would probably still know that to call a woman ‘Jezebel’ would be to accuse her of wickedness and abandonment, though they might not have read her story in the Old Testament Book of Kings I and II. A popular song sung by Frankie Laine made her name known to many in the late 1950s. Samuel Richardson makes much of the use of the name in Pamela (1740), when the heroine says to Mrs Jewkes: ‘“Why, Jezebel, would you ruin me by force?” Upon this she gave me a deadly slap on the shoulder: “Take that,” she said; “whom do you call Jezebel?”’ Later she adds: ‘I’ll Jezebel you, I will!’The Storyteller, by Harold Robbins, has an older woman saying to a younger: ‘Out of my house, you whore, you Jezebel!’ Shakespeare uses the name only once, and then not vocatively, but his use of the name is extraordinary in that he - or rather, his character Sir Andrew Aguecheek - applies it to a man: ‘Fie on him, Jezebel!’ (Twelfth Night, 2:v).
